Agriculture at ARA
ARA implements this program through community participation, local leadership and practical field-based support.
Program Overview
Institutional Framework: Integrated Agriculture and Rural Development
The agricultural sector in the southwestern coastal districts of Bangladesh, particularly Satkhira, faces severe existential threats due to climate change, rapid salinity intrusion, and the soil degradation caused by unplanned shrimp farming. To safeguard food security and rebuild rural economies, Action for Rural Advancement (ARA) has pioneered a sustainable development model that seamlessly integrates modern agricultural technology with indigenous coastal wisdom.
Core Objectives
Over the past years, ARAβs strategic interventions have successfully transformed the lives and livelihoods of more than 12,700 marginalized beneficiaries, building a climate-resilient framework for sustainable farming.
Key Activities
ARAβs agricultural mandate is driven by the following core innovative interventions:
Community Impact
Climate-Smart Agriculture (CSA): To counter high soil salinity, ARA promotes the cultivation of scientifically verified and localized salt-tolerant rice and vegetable varieties. By introducing eco-friendly techniques like vertical gardening, multi-tier cropping, and organic vermicompost production, ARA ensures year-round agricultural productivity despite harsh environmental conditions.
Strategic Approach
Resilient Livestock and Poultry Management: Recognizing livestock as a critical financial asset for rural families, ARA provides high-yielding crossbreeds along with essential technical training. To protect animals from devastating cyclones and tidal surges, ARA constructs elevated, climate-resilient livestock shelters (Machang system), ensuring asset protection during natural disasters.
Future Direction
Youth Development & Skills Partnership: In collaboration with the Department of Youth Development, Department of Social Services, and international partners like Oxfam and the German Embassy, ARA actively engages local youth. Initiatives like the Youth POS Pilot train young entrepreneurs in modern livestock management and animal welfare, creating green employment opportunities within the rural economy.
