Founder & Executive Director, ARA
Dear friends and partners,
In 1996, I witnessed the harsh realities faced by marginalised communities in Satkhira—poverty, recurring cyclones, floods, and the devastating effects of climate change. Yet, amidst these challenges, I also saw resilience, courage, and untapped potential. That vision gave birth to Action for Rural Advancement (ARA), an organisation dedicated to empowering people to lead their own transformation.
Over the past three decades, ARA has demonstrated that development is not charity—it is empowerment. Our initiatives have focused on climate-resilient housing, safe water and sanitation (WASH), sustainable livelihoods, youth and women’s leadership, and humane elderly care. Each program has been rooted in participatory planning, transparency, accountability, and respect for local knowledge.
I firmly believe that “development becomes meaningful only when people themselves lead the change.” This principle has guided our journey from the very beginning.
Today, ARA is more than an organisation—it is a movement. We envision a society where every individual enjoys dignity, security, and opportunity. Our mission is to build climate-resilient communities where no one is left behind.
Your support, collaboration, and trust are our greatest strength. Together, we can create a Bangladesh where marginalised voices are heard, where communities thrive, and where every person has the power to shape their own future.
Thank you. Sheikh Abul Kalam Azad, Executive Director, ARA, Satkhira, Bangladesh
